About the event
For the final guest lecture organised by S.V.K. Dokkaebi and the Korean Studies Research Seminar of this college year, we invite you to join Dr Ouellette on a trip to North Korea, where tourism plays an important role in politics. During this lecture he will consider important questions surrounding the topic of North Korean tourism. Is the goal of tourism to bring in foreign currency? Or is the goal much deeper than that? And why has the border only been opened to a select few visitors while the tourism projects surrounding Wonsan and Samjiyon are of a much larger scale? In order to answer these questions he will take us on a deep dive of the decade-plus of 'socialist tourism' development under the Kim Jong Un regime, looking at the perceived designs, functionality, and instrumentality of this leader-led industry.
Dr. Ouellette is a professor at Kyungnam University in South Korea…
